  1. Nevertheless the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations.

  7. As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
  8. That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
  9. To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;

  12. In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
  13. And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
  14. To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
  15. Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
  16. To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.

Elijah’s Coming

  1. And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come.
  1. Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:

God’s Chosen Servant

  1. Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.
  2. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.
  3. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.
  4. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
  1. Behold my servant, whom I uphold; mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth; I have put my spirit upon him: he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles.
  2. He shall not cry, nor lift up, nor cause his voice to be heard in the street.
  3. A bruised reed shall he not break, and the smoking flax shall he not quench: he shall bring forth judgment unto truth.
  4. He shall not fail nor be discouraged, till he have set judgment in the earth: and the isles shall wait for his law.
  5. Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
  6. I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
  7. To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.

JHVH speaks of His chosen servant

Spiritual Blindness

  1. Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
  2. And in them is fulfilled the prophecy of Esaias, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and shall not perceive:
  3. For this people’s heart is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes they have closed; lest at any time they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and should understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
  1. And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.
  2. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

Empty Worship

  1. Ye hypocrites, well did Esaias prophesy of you, saying,
  2. This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me.
  3. But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
  1. Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:

JHVH speaks of people’s superficial worship

Divine Planting

  1. But he answered and said, Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up.
  1. Thy people also shall be all righteous: they shall inherit the land for ever, the branch of my planting, the work of my hands, that I may be glorified.

Triumphal Entry

  1. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
  2. Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.
  1. Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.
  2. And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from river even to the ends of the earth.
  3. As for thee also, by the blood of thy covenant I have sent forth thy prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
  1. Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highways; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.
  2. Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
  3. And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.

JHVH announces salvation’s coming

Blessed Coming in Lord’s Name

  1. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.
  2. And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?
  3. And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.
  1. Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
  1. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.
  1. And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
  2. Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.
  1. Saying, Blessed be the King that cometh in the name of the Lord: peace in heaven, and glory in the highest.
  1. Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord.

House of Prayer

  1. And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.
  1. Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
  1. Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

JHVH calls temple His house

Children’s Praise

  1. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
  2. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,
  3. And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?
  1. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

Rejected Cornerstone

  1. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
  1. The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
  2. This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
  1. And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon’s, greatly wondering.
  2. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this? or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk?
  1. And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
  2. And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
  3. And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
  4. And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
  5. And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
  6. Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
  7. But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.
  8. And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
  9. What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
  10. And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
  11. This was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?
  12. And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.
  1. Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:
  2. And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.
  3. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.
  4. What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?
  5. And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:
  6. And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.
  7. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.
  1. I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
  2. Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
  1. And he beheld them, and said, What is this then that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner?
  2. Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
  1. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.
  1. Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.
  2. And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
  3. And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.
  1. Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;
  2. As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
  1. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
  1. Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

God of the Living

  1. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,
  2. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living.
  1. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
  1. And thou shalt say unto him, The LORD God of the Hebrews hath sent me unto thee, saying, Let my people go, that they may serve me in the wilderness: and, behold, hitherto thou wouldest not hear.

Lord of David

  1. While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them,
  2. Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.
  3. He saith unto them, How then doth David in spirit call him Lord, saying,
  4. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool?
  5. If David then call him Lord, how is he his son?
  6. And no man was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.
  1. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
  1. But Jesus held his peace. And the high priest answered and said unto him, I adjure thee by the living God, that thou tell us whether thou be the Christ, the Son of God.
  2. Jesus saith unto him, Thou hast said: nevertheless I say unto you, Hereafter shall ye see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
  1. But he held his peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and said unto him, Art thou the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?
  2. And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.
  3. Then the high priest rent his clothes, and saith, What need we any further witnesses?
  4. Ye have heard the blasphemy: what think ye? And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.
  1. And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.
  1. But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ’s at his coming.
  2. Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
  3. For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet.
  4. The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death.
  5. For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith, all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him.
  6. And when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all.
  1. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.
  2. Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.
  3. When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;
  4. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
  5. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
  6. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:
  7. All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;
  8. The fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
  9. O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth!
  1. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.
  2. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey him.
  1. If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.
  1. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
  1. But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God;
  2. From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool.

One Father

  1. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.
  1. A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?
  1. Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers?

JHVH identifies Himself as the Father

Shepherd Struck

  1. Then saith Jesus unto them, All ye shall be offended because of me this night: for it is written, I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered abroad.
  2. But after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
  1. Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones.

JHVH speaks of His fellow/companion, indicating distinction between Father and Son*

Blood Money

  1. And the chief priests took the silver pieces, and said, It is not lawful for to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.
  2. And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter’s field, to bury strangers in.
  3. Wherefore that field was called, The field of blood, unto this day.
  4. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued, whom they of the children of Israel did value;
  5. And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord appointed me.
  1. And I said unto them, If ye think good, give me my price; and if not, forbear. So they weighed for my price thirty pieces of silver.
  2. And the LORD said unto me, Cast it unto the potter: a goodly price that I was prised at of them. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them to the potter in the house of the LORD.

Garments Divided

  1. And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

Psalm shows Christ praying to JHVH (Father)

Forsaken Cry

  1. And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?
  1. He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

Greatest Commandment

  1. And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?
  2. And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
  3. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
  4. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
  5. And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
  6. And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.
  7. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
  1. Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
  2. And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

JHVH identified as the one God

Numbered with Transgressors

  1. And the superscription of his accusation was written over, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
  2. And with him they crucify two thieves; the one on his right hand, and the other on his left.
  3. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.
  1. Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Light to Nations

  1. Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said,
  2. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word:
  1. The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
  1. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
  1. Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name.
  2. And he hath made my mouth like a sharp sword; in the shadow of his hand hath he hid me, and made me a polished shaft; in his quiver hath he hid me;
  3. And said unto me, Thou art my servant, O Israel, in whom I will be glorified.
  4. Then I said, I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nought, and in vain: yet surely my judgment is with the LORD, and my work with my God.
  5. And now, saith the LORD that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the LORD, and my God shall be my strength.
  6. And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth.
  7. Thus saith the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel, and his Holy One, to him whom man despiseth, to him whom the nation abhorreth, to a servant of rulers, Kings shall see and arise, princes also shall worship, because of the LORD that is faithful, and the Holy One of Israel, and he shall choose thee.
  8. Thus saith the LORD, In an acceptable time have I heard thee, and in a day of salvation have I helped thee: and I will preserve thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages;
  9. That thou mayest say to the prisoners, Go forth; to them that are in darkness, Shew yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places.
  10. They shall not hunger nor thirst; neither shall the heat nor sun smite them: for he that hath mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them.
  11. And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted.
  12. Behold, these shall come from far: and, lo, these from the north and from the west; and these from the land of Sinim.
  1. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.
  1. Thus saith God the LORD, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein:
  2. I the LORD have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles;
  3. To open the blind eyes, to bring out the prisoners from the prison, and them that sit in darkness out of the prison house.
  4. I am the LORD: that is my name: and my glory will I not give to another, neither my praise to graven images.
  1. The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God.
  1. And he came into all the country about Jordan, preaching the baptism of repentance for the remission of sins;
  2. As it is written in the book of the words of Esaias the prophet, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
  3. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low; and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways shall be made smooth;
  4. And all flesh shall see the salvation of God.
  1. The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
  2. He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

JHVH speaks of appointing another as light

Spirit of the Lord

  1. And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.
  2. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
  3. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
  4. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
  1. The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;
  2. To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;
  3. To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.

Spirit of JHVH (Father) upon the Messiah

Angels Ascending

  1. And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
  1. And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
  2. And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;

JHVH appears as distinct from the Son of Man

Zeal for Temple

  1. And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father’s house an house of merchandise.
  2. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
  1. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Son from Heaven

  1. And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
  1. Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son’s name, if thou canst tell?

Prophet Like Moses

  1. Then those men, when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, This is of a truth that prophet that should come into the world.
  1. The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
  2. According to all that thou desiredst of the LORD thy God in Horeb in the day of the assembly, saying, Let me not hear again the voice of the LORD my God, neither let me see this great fire any more, that I die not.
  3. And the LORD said unto me, They have well spoken that which they have spoken.
  4. I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him.

JHVH promises to raise up the prophet

Taught by God

  1. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
  2. It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Every man therefore that hath heard, and hath learned of the Father, cometh unto me.
  1. And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.
  1. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
  2. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Sons of God

  1. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods?
  2. If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came, and the scripture cannot be broken;
  3. Say ye of him, whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world, Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
  1. I have said, Ye are gods; and all of you are children of the most High.

Blinded Eyes

  1. But though he had done so many miracles before them, yet they believed not on him:
  2. That the saying of Esaias the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spake, Lord, who hath believed our report? and to whom hath the arm of the Lord been revealed?
  3. Therefore they could not believe, because that Esaias said again,
  4. He hath blinded their eyes, and hardened their heart; that they should not see with their eyes, nor understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
  5. These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
  1. Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
  1. And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
  2. Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
  3. For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
  1. And the four beasts had each of them six wings about him; and they were full of eyes within: and they rest not day and night, saying, Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which was, and is, and is to come.
  2. And when those beasts give glory and honour and thanks to him that sat on the throne, who liveth for ever and ever,

Betrayer’s Portion

  1. I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.
  1. Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
  2. But thou, O LORD, be merciful unto me, and raise me up, that I may requite them.
  3. By this I know that thou favourest me, because mine enemy doth not triumph over me.
  4. And as for me, thou upholdest me in mine integrity, and settest me before thy face for ever.
  5. Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.

Hated Without Cause

  1. But this cometh to pass, that the word might be fulfilled that is written in their law, They hated me without a cause.
  1. Let not them that are mine enemies wrongfully rejoice over me: neither let them wink with the eye that hate me without a cause.
  1. They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of mine head: they that would destroy me, being mine enemies wrongfully, are mighty: then I restored that which I took not away.

Authority Given

  1. As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
  1. And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.

Kidron Crossing

  1. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
  1. And all the country wept with a loud voice, and all the people passed over: the king also himself passed over the brook Kidron, and all the people passed over, toward the way of the wilderness.
  2. And lo Zadok also, and all the Levites were with him, bearing the ark of the covenant of God: and they set down the ark of God; and Abiathar went up, until all the people had done passing out of the city.
  3. And the king said unto Zadok, Carry back the ark of God into the city: if I shall find favour in the eyes of the LORD, he will bring me again, and shew me both it, and his habitation:

Casting Lots

  1. They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.
  1. He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.

Thirst and Vinegar

  1. After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.
  2. Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.
  3. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
  1. They gave me also gall for my meat; and in my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink.
  2. Let their table become a snare before them: and that which should have been for their welfare, let it become a trap.
  3. Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.

No Broken Bones

  1. But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
  2. And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.
  3. For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.
  4. And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
  1. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
  2. Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
  3. He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
  4. Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
  5. The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
  1. And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

JHVH speaks of being pierced, yet distinct from the pierced one

Judas’ Office

  1. For it is written in the book of Psalms, Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell therein: and his bishoprick let another take.
  1. Let his days be few; and let another take his office.
  1. Let their habitation be desolate; and let none dwell in their tents.
  1. And David saith, Let their table be made a snare, and a trap, and a stumblingblock, and a recompence unto them:
  2. Let their eyes be darkened, that they may not see, and bow down their back alway.

Spirit Poured Out

  1. But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
  2. And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:
  3. And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:
  4. And I will shew wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke:
  5. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come:
  6. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
  1. And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:
  2. And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
  3. And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
  4. The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come.
  5. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call.
  1. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Christ’s Resurrection

  1. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
  2. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
  3. Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
  1. I have set the LORD always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved.
  2. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope.
  3. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
  4. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.
  1. Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
  2. He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.
  3. This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.
  1. And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
  2. And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom.
  3. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.
  4. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
  1. The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.
  1. And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.
  2. Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Saviour, Jesus:
  1. Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear.
  2. For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
  3. Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
  4. Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.
  1. That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.
  1. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.

JHVH speaks to David’s Lord, showing distinction

Glorified Servant

  1. The God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, the God of our fathers, hath glorified his Son Jesus; whom ye delivered up, and denied him in the presence of Pilate, when he was determined to let him go.
  1. Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall be exalted and extolled, and be very high.
  1. And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers,
  2. God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus again; as it is also written in the second psalm, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee.
  3. And as concerning that he raised him up from the dead, now no more to return to corruption, he said on this wise, I will give you the sure mercies of David.
  4. Wherefore he saith also in another psalm, Thou shalt not suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
  5. For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell on sleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:
  6. But he, whom God raised again, saw no corruption.
  1. Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.
  2. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people.
  3. Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the LORD thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

Prophet and Blessing

  1. Ye men of Israel, hear these words; Jesus of Nazareth, a man approved of God among you by miracles and wonders and signs, which God did by him in the midst of you, as ye yourselves also know:
  2. Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
  3. Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it.
  4. For David speaketh concerning him, I foresaw the Lord always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
  5. Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
  1. The LORD thy God will raise up unto thee a Prophet from the midst of thee, of thy brethren, like unto me; unto him ye shall hearken;
  5. And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.
  1. Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:
  2. And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:
  3. And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.
  1. And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
  2. And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.

Prayer Against Persecution

  1. And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them.
  2. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
  3. Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?
  4. The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.
  5. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together,
  6. For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done.
  7. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word,
  8. By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus.
  9. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.
  1. Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
  2. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
  3. Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
  4. He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the Lord shall have them in derision.
  5. Then shall he speak unto them in his wrath, and vex them in his sore displeasure.
  6. Yet have I set my king upon my holy hill of Zion.
  7. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
  8. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
  9. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.
  10. Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth.
  11. Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.
  12. Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.
  1. And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said, O LORD God of Israel, which dwellest between the cherubims, thou art the God, even thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth: thou hast made heaven and earth.

Moses and the Burning Bush

  1. And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.
  2. When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the Lord came unto him,
  3. Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.
  4. Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.
  5. I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.
  6. This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.
  7. This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:
  1. Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father in law, the priest of Midian: and he led the flock to the backside of the desert, and came to the mountain of God, even to Horeb.
  2. And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush: and he looked, and, behold, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.
  3. And Moses said, I will now turn aside, and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.
  4. And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called unto him out of the midst of the bush, and said, Moses, Moses. And he said, Here am I.
  5. And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
  6. Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
  7. And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows;
  8. And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites.

JHVH appears as the God of the fathers

Idol Worship

  1. And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.
  2. Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?
  3. Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.
  1. Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
  2. But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves.
  3. Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

God’s True Temple

  1. But Solomon built him an house.
  2. Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands; as saith the prophet,
  3. Heaven is my throne, and earth is my footstool: what house will ye build me? saith the Lord: or what is the place of my rest?
  4. Hath not my hand made all these things?
  1. Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest?
  2. For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
  1. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands;
  1. Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.

First it talks about the Father, and at the end about the Son.

The Suffering Servant

  1. And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
  2. The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
  3. In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
  4. And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?
  5. Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.
  6. And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
  7. And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
  8. And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
  1. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.
  2. He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

The passage reveals the prophetic fulfillment in Jesus Christ, aligning with the description of the suffering servant in Isaiah.

Restoration of David’s Fallen Tent

  1. After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up:
  2. That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things.
  1. In that day will I raise up the tabernacle of David that is fallen, and close up the breaches thereof; and I will raise up his ruins, and I will build it as in the days of old:
  2. That they may possess the remnant of Edom, and of all the heathen, which are called by my name, saith the LORD that doeth this.

The prophecy of Amos is quoted, showing JHVH (the LORD) as the one restoring and gathering nations.

God’s Name Profaned Among the Nations

  1. For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.
  1. Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is blasphemed.

JHVH (the LORD) identifies Himself as the one whose name is profaned due to His people’s disobedience.

No One is Righteous

  1. As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
  2. There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
  3. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
  4. Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
  5. Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
  6. Their feet are swift to shed blood:
  7. Destruction and misery are in their ways:
  8. And the way of peace have they not known:
  9. There is no fear of God before their eyes.
  1. For there is no faithfulness in their mouth; their inward part is very wickedness; their throat is an open sepulchre; they flatter with their tongue.
  1. The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
  2. The LORD looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.
  3. They are all gone aside, they are all together become filthy: there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
  1. His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity.
  1. The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.
  1. They have sharpened their tongues like a serpent; adders’ poison is under their lips. Selah.
  1. Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.
  2. The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

These references emphasize the universal sinfulness of humanity before a holy God.

Abraham’s Faith Accounted as Righteousness

  1. For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
  1. And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

JHVH is revealed as the one accounting faith as righteousness.

Blessed Are Those Whose Sins Are Forgiven

  1. Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
  2. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
  1. Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.
  2. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

The psalmist acknowledges JHVH as the one who forgives and covers sins.

Abraham as Father of Many Nations

  1. Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
  2. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
  3. (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
  1. And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.
  2. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.
  3. And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,
  4. As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.
  5. Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
  6. And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.
  7. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.
  8. And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

JHVH promises to make Abraham the father of many nations, a prophecy fulfilled in Christ.

God’s Sovereignty in Mercy

  1. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.
  2. So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.
  3. For the scripture saith unto Pharaoh, Even for this same purpose have I raised thee up, that I might shew my power in thee, and that my name might be declared throughout all the earth.
  1. And the LORD said unto Moses, Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and say unto him, Thus saith the LORD God of the Hebrews, Let my people go, that they may serve me.
  2. For I will at this time send all my plagues upon thine heart, and upon thy servants, and upon thy people; that thou mayest know that there is none like me in all the earth.
  3. For now I will stretch out my hand, that I may smite thee and thy people with pestilence; and thou shalt be cut off from the earth.
  4. And in very deed for this cause have I raised thee up, for to shew in thee my power; and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth.
  1. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.

JHVH asserts His sovereign right to show mercy and demonstrate His power.

God’s People Called From Among the Nations

  1. As he saith also in Osee, I will call them my people, which were not my people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.
  2. And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.
  1. And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.
  1. Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.

JHVH calls those who were not His people to become His people, demonstrating His mercy.

A Remnant of Israel Will Be Saved

  1. Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved:
  2. For he will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.
  1. For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, yet a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness.

JHVH ensures salvation for a faithful remnant of Israel.

Righteousness by Faith

  1. But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)
  2. Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)
  3. But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;
  1. For this commandment which I command thee this day, it is not hidden from thee, neither is it far off.
  2. It is not in heaven, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go up for us to heaven, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
  3. Neither is it beyond the sea, that thou shouldest say, Who shall go over the sea for us, and bring it unto us, that we may hear it, and do it?
  4. But the word is very nigh unto thee, in thy mouth, and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it.

God’s word is near, highlighting faith over works, with JHVH speaking through Moses.

The Beautiful Feet of Gospel Preachers

  1. And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!
  1. How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!

The proclamation of the gospel is likened to JHVH’s messengers announcing peace.

God’s Revelation to the Gentiles

  1. But Esaias is very bold, and saith, I was found of them that sought me not; I was made manifest unto them that asked not after me.
  2. But to Israel he saith, All day long I have stretched forth my hands unto a disobedient and gainsaying people.
  1. I am sought of them that asked not for me; I am found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.
  2. I have spread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

JHVH reveals Himself to those who did not seek Him, displaying His grace.

Israel’s Hardening and the Gentiles’ Inclusion

  1. What then? Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded
  2. (According as it is written, God hath given them the spirit of slumber, eyes that they should not see, and ears that they should not hear;) unto this day.
  1. For the LORD hath poured out upon you the spirit of deep sleep, and hath closed your eyes: the prophets and your rulers, the seers hath he covered.
  2. And the vision of all is become unto you as the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to one that is learned, saying, Read this, I pray thee: and he saith, I cannot; for it is sealed:
  3. Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.

JHVH blinds some of Israel to fulfill His sovereign purposes.

The Deliverer Will Come From Zion

  1. For I would not, brethren, that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits; that blindness in part is happened to Israel, until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in.
  2. And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:
  3. For this is my covenant unto them, when I shall take away their sins.
  1. And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the LORD.
  2. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the LORD; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the LORD, from henceforth and for ever.
  1. By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.

JHVH promises a Redeemer for Jacob, connecting to His covenant.

God’s Wisdom is Unsearchable

  1. For who hath known the mind of the Lord? or who hath been his counsellor?
  1. Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?
  2. With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
  1. Behold, God exalteth by his power: who teacheth like him?
  2. Who hath enjoined him his way? or who can say, Thou hast wrought iniquity?
  1. For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.

The incomparable wisdom of JHVH is emphasized.

Vengeance Belongs to the Lord

  1. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
  1. To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.
  1. Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace?
  2. For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people.
  3. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

JHVH declares vengeance and judgment belong to Him alone.

Overcoming Evil with Good

  1. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head.
  2. Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
  1. If thine enemy be hungry, give him bread to eat; and if he be thirsty, give him water to drink:
  2. For thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head, and the LORD shall reward thee.

JHVH rewards those who act with kindness toward their enemies.

Every Knee Will Bow

  1. But why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
  2. For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.
  1. Tell ye, and bring them near; yea, let them take counsel together: who hath declared this from ancient time? who hath told it from that time? have not I the LORD? and there is no God else beside me; a just God and a Saviour; there is none beside me.
  2. Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth: for I am God, and there is none else.
  3. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.

JHVH proclaims that all will bow before Him and acknowledge Him as God.

Christ Bore Reproach for God’s Name

  1. For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
  1. For the zeal of thine house hath eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached thee are fallen upon me.

Jesus fulfills the psalm, showing zeal for JHVH’s house and suffering for His sake.

God’s Promise to the Gentiles

  1. Now I say that Jesus Christ was a minister of the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made unto the fathers:
  2. And that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy; as it is written, For this cause I will confess to thee among the Gentiles, and sing unto thy name.
  3. And again he saith, Rejoice, ye Gentiles, with his people.
  4. And again, Praise the Lord, all ye Gentiles; and laud him, all ye people.
  5. And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.
  1. Therefore will I give thanks unto thee, O LORD, among the heathen, and sing praises unto thy name.
  1. Rejoice, O ye nations, with his people: for he will avenge the blood of his servants, and will render vengeance to his adversaries, and will be merciful unto his land, and to his people.
  1. And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious.

JHVH’s plan includes the salvation and worship of Gentiles through the Messiah.

Abraham’s Covenant

  1. Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto.
  2. Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ.
  3. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.
  1. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:
  1. Ye are the children of the prophets, and of the covenant which God made with our fathers, saying unto Abraham, And in thy seed shall all the kindreds of the earth be blessed.
  2. Unto you first God, having raised up his Son Jesus, sent him to bless you, in turning away every one of you from his iniquities.
  1. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Barren Woman Rejoices

  1. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.
  1. Sing, O barren, thou that didst not bear; break forth into singing, and cry aloud, thou that didst not travail with child: for more are the children of the desolate than the children of the married wife, saith the LORD.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Peace Through Christ

  1. But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.
  2. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;
  3. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;
  4. And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:
  5. And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.
  6. For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
  1. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.
  2. I create the fruit of the lips; Peace, peace to him that is far off, and to him that is near, saith the LORD; and I will heal him.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Ascension and Gifts

  1. But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.
  2. Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.
  3. (Now that he ascended, what is it but that he also descended first into the lower parts of the earth?
  4. He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.)
  5. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
  6. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
  1. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, for the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell among them.

JHVH (Father) and Son are both present, as visible in the text.

Awakening from Death

  1. Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.
  1. Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the LORD is risen upon thee.
  2. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the LORD shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

God’s Speech in the Past

  1. God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,
  2. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
  1. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
  2. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Superiority of the Son

  1. Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
  2. For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?
  1. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
  1. I will be his father, and he shall be my son: and I will not take my mercy away from him, as I took it from him that was before thee:
  1. He shall build an house for my name; and he shall be my son, and I will be his father; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom over Israel for ever.
  1. And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him to be my son, and I will be his father.
  1. I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.
  1. And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:
  2. And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.
  3. And I will give him the morning star.
  1. Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession.
  2. Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Worship of the Son

  1. And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
  1. Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Angels as Servants

  1. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
  1. Who maketh his angels spirits; his ministers a flaming fire:

Eternal Throne

  1. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
  2. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
  1. Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of thy kingdom is a right sceptre.
  2. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

God’s Enduring Nature

  1. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
  2. They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
  3. And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
  1. He weakened my strength in the way; he shortened my days.
  2. I said, O my God, take me not away in the midst of my days: thy years are throughout all generations.
  3. Of old hast thou laid the foundation of the earth: and the heavens are the work of thy hands.
  4. They shall perish, but thou shalt endure: yea, all of them shall wax old like a garment; as a vesture shalt thou change them, and they shall be changed:
  5. But thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.

Man’s Place in Creation

  1. But one in a certain place testified, saying, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? or the son of man, that thou visitest him?
  2. Thou madest him a little lower than the angels; thou crownedst him with glory and honour, and didst set him over the works of thy hands:
  3. Thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that he put all in subjection under him, he left nothing that is not put under him. But now we see not yet all things put under him.
  4. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.
  1. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?
  2. For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.
  3. Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet:

Praise and Trust in God

  1. Saying, I will declare thy name unto my brethren, in the midst of the church will I sing praise unto thee.
  2. And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
  1. I will declare thy name unto my brethren: in the midst of the congregation will I praise thee.
  1. And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

Moses and Christ

  1. Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;
  2. Who was faithful to him that appointed him, as also Moses was faithful in all his house.
  3. For this man was counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as he who hath builded the house hath more honour than the house.
  4. For every house is builded by some man; but he that built all things is God.
  5. And Moses verily was faithful in all his house, as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken after;
  6. But Christ as a son over his own house; whose house are we, if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope firm unto the end.
  1. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house.

Harden Not Your Hearts

  1. Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,
  2. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
  3. When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years.
  4. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways.
  5. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
  1. O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.
  2. For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,
  3. Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
  4. When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
  5. Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
  6. Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Priesthood of Melchizedek

  1. As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
  1. The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.
  2. The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

God’s Promise to Abraham

  1. For when God made promise to Abraham, because he could swear by no greater, he sware by himself,
  2. Saying, Surely blessing I will bless thee, and multiplying I will multiply thee.
  3. And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
  4. For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
  5. Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
  6. That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us:
  7. Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil;
  1. And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham out of heaven the second time,
  2. And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
  3. That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
  4. And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

New Covenant

  1. For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah:
  2. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord.
  3. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:
  4. And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.
  5. For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more.
  1. Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
  2. Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
  3. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
  4. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD; for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
  1. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before,
  2. This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them;
  3. And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.

Blood of the Covenant

  1. Saying, This is the blood of the testament which God hath enjoined unto you.
  1. And Moses took the blood, and sprinkled it on the people, and said, Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you concerning all these words.

Sacrifice and Obedience

  1. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
  2. Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me:
  3. In burnt offerings and sacrifices for sin thou hast had no pleasure.
  4. Then said I, Lo, I come (in the volume of the book it is written of me,) to do thy will, O God.
  5. Above when he said, Sacrifice and offering and burnt offerings and offering for sin thou wouldest not, neither hadst pleasure therein; which are offered by the law;
  6. Then said he, Lo, I come to do thy will, O God. He taketh away the first, that he may establish the second.
  7. By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
  1. Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required.
  2. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me,
  3. I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.

The Coming One

  1. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.
  2. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
  1. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry, wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry.
  2. Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

Abraham’s Faith Tested

  1. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,
  2. Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:
  1. And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called.
  1. Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called.

Discipline from God

  1. And ye have forgotten the exhortation which speaketh unto you as unto children, My son, despise not thou the chastening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:
  2. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
  3. If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
  4. But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.
  5. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?
  6. For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
  1. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
  2. For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
  1. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

God’s Voice and Shaking

  1. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh. For if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven:
  2. Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, saying, Yet once more I shake not the earth only, but also heaven.
  1. Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts:
  2. According to the word that I covenanted with you when ye came out of Egypt, so my spirit remaineth among you: fear ye not.
  3. For thus saith the LORD of hosts; Yet once, it is a little while, and I will shake the heavens, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry land;
  4. And I will shake all nations, and the desire of all nations shall come: and I will fill this house with glory, saith the LORD of hosts.

Consuming Fire

  1. For our God is a consuming fire.
  1. For the LORD thy God is a consuming fire, even a jealous God.

God’s Unchanging Nature

  1. Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
  2. So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me.
  1. Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
  1. And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
  1. There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

Gifts from Above

  1. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
  1. For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.

JHVH is the Father, as visible in the text.

Grace to the Humble

  1. But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
  1. Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.

Workers’ Wages

  1. Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.
  1. At his day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and setteth his heart upon it: lest he cry against thee unto the LORD, and it be sin unto thee.

Patience of Job

  1. Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy.
  1. The LORD is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.
  1. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

Call to Holiness

  1. But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
  2. Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
  1. For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

God’s Impartiality

  1. And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:
  2. Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
  1. For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward:
  2. He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.
  3. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.
  4. Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; him shalt thou serve, and to him shalt thou cleave, and swear by his name.
  5. He is thy praise, and he is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and terrible things, which thine eyes have seen.

Christ’s Example of Suffering

  1. For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:
  2. Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:
  3. Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:
  4. Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.
  5. For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.
  1. And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

Pursuing Peace

  1. For he that will love life, and see good days, let him refrain his tongue from evil, and his lips that they speak no guile:
  2. Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it.
  3. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.
  1. What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
  2. Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
  3. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
  4. The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
  5. The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

Michael and Satan

  1. Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.
  1. And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

The First and the Last

  1. And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
  1. Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he.
  1. Thus saith the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God.
  1. Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last.

Judgment According to Deeds

  1. And I will kill her children with death; and all the churches shall know that I am he which searcheth the reins and hearts: and I will give unto every one of you according to your works.
  1. But, O LORD of hosts, that judgest righteously, that triest the reins and the heart, let me see thy vengeance on them: for unto thee have I revealed my cause.

The Key of David

  1. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
  1. Thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, Go, get thee unto this treasurer, even unto Shebna, which is over the house, and say,
  2. What hast thou here? and whom hast thou here, that thou hast hewed thee out a sepulchre here, as he that heweth him out a sepulchre on high, and that graveth an habitation for himself in a rock?
  3. Behold, the LORD will carry thee away with a mighty captivity, and will surely cover thee.
  4. He will surely violently turn and toss thee like a ball into a large country: there shalt thou die, and there the chariots of thy glory shall be the shame of thy lord’s house.
  5. And I will drive thee from thy station, and from thy state shall he pull thee down.
  6. And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah:
  7. And I will clothe him with thy robe, and strengthen him with thy girdle, and I will commit thy government into his hand: and he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
  8. And the key of the house of David will I lay upon his shoulder; so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.
  9. And I will fasten him as a nail in a sure place; and he shall be for a glorious throne to his father’s house.
  10. And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father’s house, the offspring and the issue, all vessels of small quantity, from the vessels of cups, even to all the vessels of flagons.
  11. In that day, saith the LORD of hosts, shall the nail that is fastened in the sure place be removed, and be cut down, and fall; and the burden that was upon it shall be cut off: for the LORD hath spoken it.
